August 20th, 2009 Vinay No comments

There is a lot of action happening at SpringSource. Only after a week being acuqired by VMware , SpringSource bough CloudyFoundry, a year-old Oakland-based startup focused on pushing Java into the cloud.

Andi Mann, vice president of research at Enterprise Management Associates commented

SpringSource’s Enterprise Java Cloud is a service that is based on far more than merely acquiring Cloud Foundry.Certainly the functionality provided by Cloud Foundry is key, but SpringSource’s solutions for building, running and managing Java applications are ideally suited for applications that are deployed in the cloud. The new service brings this all together. For companies where the cloud deployment option makes sense, SpringSource has a killer offering.

What is google Guice ?

August 19th, 2009 Vinay No comments

People generally confuse with google Juice and google Guice.

Google Juice is the value that
Google
gives to your site, for having a link from a good site. The value adds up for each link, and you get better search rankings

Google Guice is a lightweight dependency injection framework for Java 5 and above, brought to you by Google.

So if it is a lightweight dependency injection framework , the next question that comes to mind of programmers is it same as Spring or better than Spring ?

Google has explained the difference between Spring and Google Guice.

Guice and Spring don’t compete directly. Guice was born purely out of use cases from one of Google’s biggest applications: AdWords.

(that is a fantastic usage of dependency injection).

Spring supports two polar configuration styles: explicit configuration and auto-wiring

Guice wholly embraces annotations and generics.

So even if they both are based on principle of dependency injection , they are not same.

Yahoo BoSS’s – Vik Singh among top 35 young innovators of 2009.

August 19th, 2009 Vinay No comments

In a recent post on TechCrunch,  it said that Yahoo’s BOSS API could be bigger than Bing. Yahoo Boss is its open search APIs which lets developers create their own custom search engine using Yahoo’s algorithms.

Vik Singh was the brain behind’s the Yahoo BOSS API and has named top 35 young innovators of 2009.

By last May, Yahoo BOSS was serving up 30 million search queries a day but comScore doesn’t count API calls to YAhoo BOSS. That essentially means yahoo market share could be much greater than predicted based on comScore results.

SpringSource acquired by VMWare

August 11th, 2009 Vinay No comments

VMware , the global leader in virtualization solutions have today annouced the acquisition of springSource . VMware will acquire SpringSource for approximately $362 million in cash and equity plus the assumption of approximately $58 million of unvested stock and options.

I have been a big fan of spring soucre and their business model. SpringSource developed an excellent framework which they gave to public and developed a very good business model around consulting. While Sun had developed java , they never build a business around consulting. Sun microsystem focused mainly on hardware.

On other hand Spring Source build a business model around Open Source and earned revenues with Consulting , training and certification.

VM ware gets an excellent product base and a super team.

Congrats to Spring Source team!!

Razorfish, one of the largest online interactive ad agencies in the world which was bought by Microsoft in 2007 , has been sold to Publicis , a French advertising firm for approx $ 530 million. Razorfish and Quantive were acquired by Microsoft  as a countermeasure against Google. But razor fish never really made sense for Microsoft.

This agreement also guarantees cheaper advertising rates on all Microsoft owned properties for the french advertising giant and Publicis is also going to spend couple of hundred million dollars on all properties of microsoft.

Not a bad deal overall

Twitter still down with DDOS attacks – What is DDOS attack ?

August 9th, 2009 Vinay No comments

This week Twitter and facebook both faced DDOS attacks which bright their service down for some time. While facebook has recovered , twitter is yet to recover from these attacks. Let us try to get an idea what is DDOS attack .

DDOS – Distributed denial of service attack

This is a concentrated effort of users or group of users towards a machine or network to bring down the system. The flood of incoming messages to the target system essentially forces it to shut down, thereby denying service to the system to legitimate users. This attack is done by finding a weak machine in the network and making it the DDOS master.

This is done with malicious intent by hackers to bring the system down.

While the person(s) who have brought the facebook and twitter have not yet been identified , the attacks are still ongoing.

August 2nd, 2009 Vinay No comments

A new service aimed at developing world allows uses in US to send money to their loved ones through phones. ARTRY allows people from US to send money to their loved ones in Philippines and India . And they do not charge any fees for that.

This is not exactly transferring money to the bank account but the money send here would be used towards the recharge of the phone . So they can not do much except use that towards talking and texting!

To initiate a transfer, you simply enter your credit card information, and the credit is instantly added to the cellular account of your loved one abroad.

How much this service would be useful we would see in coming days . After Nokai has bet big in mobile payment like obopay , ARTERY is trying to create a niche with its services.

Developing world will not have access to internet and laptop 24 hrs in coming years but mobile is sure to evolve more than a mean of communication
