These days we keep on hearing that computing is moving towards “Clouds” and how this will make headaches and pains associated with infrastructure and server management thing of the past.. Let us try to look at what really is cloud computing
What is cloud computing ?
Cloud computing refers to term where in a company where instead of running software , applications on in house servers or storing data locally , are doing it on a third party resources which are being termed as clouds.
So what are these clouds ?
Clouds are thousands and thousands of computers connected via internet to each other and these computers are shared by companies to host their application and manage data.
One of the best examples of the cloud computing is salesforce.com which had been working on this concept since long. Another recent example is New York Times which has provided fully searchable access to its 1851 to 1922 archive—more than 15 million articles. This has been achieved without hosting any application on its own servers. They are using Amazon’s Cloud Computing service.
Google’s business suite launched in 2007 has 0.5 million clients and it uses the power of cloud computing by offering the companies and individuals business applications hosted over internet.
Now this would give you a fair idea of what is cloud computing and what is achievable with this.
Some other players who are in the field of offering cloud computing services are
These companies are now providing cloud services to individuals and companies. One has to sign up then they are given access to their space in the clouds. The developers or application management team can connect to these clouds through various tools and deploy their application.
The price ranges on how much bandwidth is used and what is the traffic on the site.
The concept behind companies selling the cloud computing is that your infrastructure is not always loaded 100% . So during the times US has its peak load, Europe is just waking up and Hong Kong is sleeping.
When Hong Kong is utilizing 100% load, the peak load is fallen 80% in US.
In this way the resources can be managed much more effectively if they are being managed by a central vendor.
Advantages : One of the biggest advantages of cloud that I see for small to medium sized companies , they do not have to rely on in house server management.
Another advantage is that sudden spikes in load or traffic can be handled by cloud servers with companies having to manage extra servers or anything. They only need to pay for this extra load.
The offerings are reasonably priced for one to try out and google offers free version as of now.
Limitations : Now all versions of hardware have been supported by clouds . Amazon is now offering the open source web server tomcat on its cloud.
Google is also offering deployment of java applications. More information of google app engine supporting java can be found here. (I think it is free)
Sun Microsystems has also has a very goof offering on the clouds. They offer Virtualization in the cloud and also prevent vendor lockout.
Update : I have added a post to demonstrate First Step working with Cloud Computing
Facebook the social networking site , is always adding things and making Facebook more fun . Apart from the fact that come June 13th , you can have your own username which will enable your friends , family to direct to your profile. The other interesting feature is the number #1 crime game on Facebook ” Mafia Wars”..
Mafia wars on Facebook has several cool things . It is a simple text based, number crunch game, that puts in a Mafia with all your friends who play Mafia wars . You have three categories to choose from
> Mogul,
> Fearless
> Maniac.
Maniac seems good as it recovers energy faster.
The player starts out by doing jobs, with energy, for cash and moves up to buying properties for sustained income. The player then uses this income to buy bigger and better weapons from the inventory screen, which then can give them the upper hand in multiplayer fights.
As the player does more jobs, they earn experience that allows them to go up levels. As a player goes up in levels, they gain more profile points which allows them to become stronger, and to better fight rival Mafia groups.
Its extremely interesting and keeps you hooked .Well from now on Logging onto Facebook would be great fun each day:) Go on get hooked onto the game….
Had you heard about the gold rush in California in last century ? Many of us would have only read about it in books because if you are reading this blog then you would not have born at that time .
Something smilar happened last night when facebook opened its vanity url to public. It took 3 minutes to reach 200,000 usernames and till date 3 million user names have been claimed.
Oh my god!! Looks like techies did not sleep throught the night.
I could not get mine but most of the popular urls were gone within no time. This was nothing less than the gold rush of last century. It has been a tiring day for all.
But that was a great move facebook. The rush to url shows that they are a very popular social networking site. (My space , are you hearing this ?) .And they handled this high loads of traffic very well.
twitter did you hear that ?
I am not sure how many of you had noticed it but if you try to select a mail and click on delete button, it was not working y’day i.e on Saturday June 13. Was it because the google engineer were in hurry to get their vanity url on the face book ?
This problem has been resolved this morning and things were back to normal.
Maybe this was long overdue. Satyam Computer Services Ltd which had been showing tremendous growth in last decade by manipulating its book can no longer afford to do it.
The new owner tech Mahindra can no longer afford to pay people on bench when there are no projects. Satyam said that it is creating a cost-cutting program, which is effective this month, targeting employees who have not been in billable roles for three months or more. Those employees can take up to six months off and receive their basic pay and medical insurance, and may be recalled and reinstated at full pay and benefits as business demand dictates. They can also be called if any situation arises.
This move can effect 5000 to 7000 workers. The news could be bad for tech industry which had been already reeling under US recession . These 7k workers could bring more pressure to salaries of IT professionals in India.
Although this may look pretty bad for now but could be good in long term for the company where it needs to shed its extra flab and grow more comptetive.
Sorry . This post was just to confirm the blog with technorati

My first company as an entrepreneur was etattva back in 2003 in Noida, India. It was a company which started with the concept of providing training to college students or freshers who have zero exposure or very little exposure to real world development. Our focus area was Java/J2EE
Much of the credit of running this company goes to my wife who ran it full time while I supported her after my regular job. My brother was also an early supporter and he also helped us lot during our initial days.
When we moved to South Africa then back to India and then to US , we could not keep etattva running. So we thought of trying on line training . But that was not successful.
Then I thought of creating a software where people would come in and can give mock test. This idea gave birth to the current SCJP mock exams we have on etattva.
Now after 2 years have some other plans of how this could be turned into an much better platform and with this vision launched skill-guru .
I am hoping this would be a fun idea to try with. How it really goes , we will only know after couple of years.
